Every week of the year\, 20 teams of Rosies volu nteers are out on the street\, at the drop-in centre\, in the court or at prison. 285 wonderful Gold Coast Rosies volunteers (1\,150 Qld-wide) are a lways there.

Rosies is funded through the generous support of our local community. Individuals\, schools\, community groups and businesses p rovide cups and coffee\, toiletries and cordial\, blankets and meals.

Rosies started on the Gold Coast in 1987. We are the longest serving community organisation supporting the Gold Coast Schoolies Week safety pro gram. Our patron\, Sir Peter Cosgrove says “My wife and I have supported R osies for more than a decade\, and have seen first hand Rosies’ army of vo lunteers making a difference on the streets and off the streets”.

Almaden was established a s a railway workers town in 1907. Now nicknamed ‘Cow Town’ and known for t he oasis like beer garden and home made pies at the Railway Hotel. From he re there are sections of well-formed unsealed road.</p>\n<p>(110km) The tu rn-off the Mt Garnet/ Mt Surprise is unsealed and often closed during the wet season. A large green</p>\n<p>tree frog can be seen on the right of th e road.</p>\n<p>(115km/L) The first of the marble quarries is a great exam ple of the industry. There are about forty of these pits\, all producing d ifferent colours and crystal size. Blocks surround the pits to prevent cat tle wandering in for a drink and getting stranded in the mud.</p>\n<p>(123 km) A cattle grid is the property boundary of Chillagoe Station. In front\ , red volcanic skarn signals the beginning of the heat zones that converte d the Chillagoe limestone bluffs to marble\, simultaneously depositing ric h surface loads of copper and lead. The marble bluffs that follow are dark grey from algae and support unique vegetation protected from bushfires fo r many thousands of years.</p>\n<p>(140km) A cattle grid acts as a town fe nce to keep cattle out and like opening a book\, <strong>Chillagoe</strong > appears with a chimney of the now abandoned smelter on the horizon. Dim bulah was a significant tobacco growing area and later growing Tea Tree fo r the oil. Just beyond Dimbulah is Eureka Creek – a great picnic location with no facilities. From here the landscape immediately changes with aweso me panoramic views of Wooded Savannah created from years of fires lit by t he aboriginals. Termite mounds abound with sightings of Wedge Tailed Eagle s as they eat the road kill. This is cattle country with the average stati on being about 2\,000+sq kms.</p>\n<p>(74km/R) There is a historical marke r at Emu Creek where the Kennedy expedition camped in 1848. The next settl ement on the Wheelbarrow Way is (76km) <strong>Petford </strong>(public ph one only)\, originally named Wadetown and a watering hole for the miners t hat worked the area. Take extra care here as there are often horses near t he road and unlike cattle\, they are very unpredictable. On the western si de of Petford you may spot a Bustard/Plains Turkey.</p>\n<p>A little furth er is the Cycad covered (80km) Lapper Range. At the (82km) top are the rem ains of the 100+ year old Lappa Pub. This is the site of a soak (spring) w here camels watered on their journeys from the advancing railhead to the C hillagoe area in 1900. Later a branch line ran from here to the South\, no w this track is a captivating 4WD/dry-weather route to Mt Garnet with some interesting stonework and stunning panoramic views.</p>\n<p>There is a hi storical marker showing the Kooboora cemetery at 91km/R. The last remains of the very significant\, now abandoned Kooboora tin workings.</p>\n<p>(98 km) The Bismark Pass gives a great view of what lies ahead. It has since grown to become a major administrative and supply centre for the re gion.(1km/R) Eastern Grey Kangaroos can often be seen on the golf course a nd the Mareeba cemetery is typically Italian with its many crypts.</p>\n<p >(2km/R) The Rodeo ground is the home to the famous Mareeba Rodeo and Chri stmas in July celebrations for the Grey Nomads.</p>\n<p>The landscape imme diately changes to picturesque rich farmlands dotted with specialised and unique farm machinery. Solitary kookaburras can often be seen perched on p owerlines\, their heads cast down starring\, waiting for a tasty morsel in the form of a rodent or reptile to come along. This region was once a maj or rice and tobacco growing area but is now dominated by sugarcane plantat ions which are often marked by very large and spectacular overhead sprinkl er irrigation systems.</p>\n<p>Water for irrigation supplied from Tinaroo Dam enables a tremendous range of fruit and vegetables to be grown to supp ly both domestic and overseas markets. The range of crops is truly amazing and includes avocadoes\, bananas\, cashews\, citrus\, coffee\, cow pea\, custard apples\, Dolichos\, flowers\, fresh herbs\, grapes\, grass seed\, legume seed\, lettuce\, longans\, lychees\, macadamias\, maize\, mangoes\, mixed vegetables\, navy beans\, passionfruit\, paw paw\, peaches\, peanut s\, pineapples\, pumpkins\, sorghum\, sugar cane\, sweet potato\, ti tree\ , tomatoes\, native trees and watermelon. Often this produce is for sale o n the side of the road.</p>\n<p>(5km/R) Many tobacco drying sheds with uni que H shaped chimney tops are still standing but since the cessation of th e tobacco growing industry are now used only for storage.</p>\n<p>(8km/R) Coffee bushes growing in a field next to the road mark the location of the North Queensland Coffee Gold Plantation. Stop off and you can follow the coffee story from plant to cup and make sure you hear all about the famous ‘Maloberti shuffle’.</p>\n<p>(10km) Wonderful flat expanses of granite gr eet you as you pass through Granite Gorge\, the home of the Mareeba Rock W allaby.</p>\n<p>(12km) Away to the left and at the base of a distant range is the Arriga Sugar Mill.</p>\n<p>(25kmL) As the Walsh River is crossed\, on the left\, the Savannahlander Rail Bridge can be seen. My name is Andrew Keogh and I’m a 40-year-old high schoo l teacher from Glenala SHS in Brisbane with a passion for adventure.
\nFor as long as I can remember\, I have dreamed of conquering Mount Kilim anjaro – the highest summit in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountai n in the world.

After years of waiting\, I am in the fortunate pos ition of being able to choose take on this challenge.

Unfortunatel y\, there are many people in our society whose choices in life are far mor e limited.

The reality of this hit home recently when I was introd uced to the Brisbane arm of not-for-profit outreach service Rosies.

\n< p>By providing something as simple as a cup of coffee\, a biscuit or just a friendly smile and a chat\, Rosies reaches out to those who are abandone d\, marginalised or socially isolated\, offering them the experience of co mmunity and belonging.

While the outreach is made possible by a ba nd of dedicated volunteers\, Rosies depends on the generous donations of o thers to help cover the cost of the service.

To that end\, I have decided to couple Rosies’ quest with my own and use it to help raise some much-needed funds for this amazing organisation.

It’s nearly 6000m from the base to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro\, so my goal is to raise $ 1 for every metre that I will climb. Hopefully smashing this target will b e far easier than actually taking on the mountain!

My trip to Tanz ania will be entirely self-funded\, with 100 per cent of the donations goi ng to help Rosies continue their valuable work. As little as $5-10 is all it takes to make a considerable difference to those that really need it.
