With the cold winter blast hitting Toowoomba on the weekend, spare a thought for the homeless, or those less fortunate.

Rosies Friends on the Street offer food, hot drinks and friendship to around 170 people at their four outreaches in Toowoomba every week.

Fay Stein from Rosies Toowoomba said patron attendance at local branch outreaches topped 8,500 people in 2017.

75 smiling Rosies volunteers share friendship and create belonging with the homeless, marginalised and lonely of Toowoomba.

This Wednesday night, Toowoomba Grammar School (TGS) is donating five dozen sausages, five dozen strips of bacon, bread rolls, onion and sauce, along with apples, bananas and pears to give Rosies’ patrons a boost as we head into the colder months.

A number of TGS students have volunteered to help prepare, cook and serve the meals, as well as spend some time with the clients.

This is not the first time that TGS has supported Rosies; they organise four BBQs every year for their ‘Friends on the Street’.

The students enjoy giving back to the community and feel good that their small gesture makes such a difference to the lives of these people in need.

And Rosies appreciates the support from TGS.

“While Rosies is providing a warming coffee, milo, or cuppa soup, wonderful collaborators like TGS students extend the hospitality to a great BBQ and other goodies,” said Andrew O’Brien, Rosies General Manager.

“Their youthful enthusiasm and genuine interest adds wonderfully to the sense of community.”

Rosies is expecting a tough winter, with more people in need than ever before and are they’re calling on support and donations from the local community.

“Many of Rosies patrons have personal needs such as hygiene supplies and bedding,” said Mr O’Brien.

“We’d also love donations of 1kg tins of coffee and milo, cordial, sugar, biscuits, cup-a-soups and noodles.”

You can also donate funds to supply a backpack bed which are perfectly designed for those sleeping rough or couch surfing.

Rosies would also like to extend its service to another location on a Tuesday night, but need to expand their volunteer base to at least 100.

If you would like to make up those number, register online here.

The Red Rose Fund in Toowoomba is raising funds for Rosies via the Webster Cavanagh Gala Bid which is now live. You can bid on the Auction items from the comfort of your own home. In early April, Toowoomba volunteers were offered the opportunity to participate in a fundraising BBQ at the Harvey Norman Centre with the proceeds to be used for the ongoing work of Rosies outreaches. Our Rosies marquee added a carnival atmosphere to the special Car Park Sale which was held at the Harvey Norman Shopping Complex.
On thatbeautiful Autumn day, volunteers enjoyed the experience taking time between cooking and serving the public, to meet and socialise with other volunteers from the various teams. With other major events scheduled for the same day, the opening of the new Grand Central Shopping Complex and the Toowoomba Show, volunteers hard work was rewarded with the total of $740 raised for the work of Rosies. Special thanks to everyone who assisted with the organisation and to those who generously volunteered their time to provide the hot food throughout the day. We have booked another day for early October and look forward to meeting up again and enjoying the day together.
Well done and thank you!

Broncos help Rosies celebrate 30th Birthday – Broncos

For more than three decades Rosies has been helping those doing it tough so let’s help make their 30th birthday one to remember this Friday night when the Broncos take on the Raiders.

You can help the Broncos support the not-for-profit organisation by simply entering the 50/50 Charity Raffle, which last game saw a lucky fan pocket an incredible $11,800!

Rosies provides friends on the street to help create a sense of belonging for those who are homeless, marginalised, or simply lonely.

This heartfelt service provided to Queensland communities is only possible thanks to more than 1,200 Rosies’ volunteers who give up their time to assist others.

Each month 240 Rosies’ teams hit the streets, the courts as well as youth detention and women’s correctional facilities. By sharing their time, a cuppa, a snack, some basic toiletries and blankets, volunteers help those who are socially isolated feel supported. You never know when life may take a turn for the worse.

Rosies’ volunteers do this by being there, night after night, week after week.

On Friday night 60 of these generous volunteers will be at the Broncos vs Raiders game selling tickets in the 50/50 Charity Raffle so make sure you say hello and buy a ticket to support this great cause.

The lucky winner will walk away with half the total ticket sales – the other half is donated to the Brisbane Broncos Charity Fund and Rosies.

50/50 Ticket Prices

The branch has been nominated as charity of choice by the Red Rose Fund for their upcoming Gala Ball ‘Voyage a Paris‘. to be held in Toowoomba on June 16. What an inspirational group of women giving back to their community!
The ongoing support from the Toowoomba community ensures that three nights a week friendship is shared around the community BBQ.

For years Maureen Pagan ( who is 92 years young) has supported Rosies from afar. Living 400 kms from the nearest Rosies branch in Toowoomba, has not stopped this wonderful Rosies supporter.

She has donated dozens and dozens of eggs which she purchases from a free range egg farm. These are used at the weekly BBQ’s aligned with Rosies outreach. Our Toowoomba branch is quite unique in the way it has established partnerships with other community organisations and schools.

Each time Rosies has an outreach, a group is there providing the BBQ, using eggs supplied by Maureen. Special treats of home baked cakes and biscuits are delivered by her and are always a highlight with the patrons. She has also provided the financial support for the past two Christmas celebrations which allowed the Toowoomba branch to purchase much for the Christmas Day outreaches. Maureen also assisted with the preparation of the Carnival float by feeding the volunteers for several days while everyone worked to complete the float. It was great to have morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea all prepared for the volunteers so that they could concentrate on decorations for the float.

Maureen did not stumble across Rosies, her daughter Fay has been volunteering since Rosies began in Toowoomba in 2013. Fay is now one of the Branch Coordinators in Toowoomba. Rosies thanks Maureen, a great example of the different ways you can support Rosies.

toowoomba-bbq_trailerIt was with great excitement that the Toowoomba branch unveiled its newest acquisition, a barbecue trailer to use at Outreaches. Our friends on the street are very happy with the faster, more efficient cooking, and the reduced waiting time is appreciated in the chilly Toowoomba weather. The barbecue trailer was skillfully customised by David, husband of volunteer, Annette. This has become a great addition to the “team” and Rosies is grateful to have this wonderful asset to improve service to the disadvantaged in Toowoomba. Thanks to the Department of Justice & Attorney General for providing funds.

toowoomba_apexRosies Toowoomba branch receive wonderful community support including being generously assisted by the South Toowoomba Apex Club. Each month they cook a BBQ for the Sunday outreach with the Club members providing all food and delicious home cooked treats for the enjoyment of our many friends. Recently the Rosies branch was presented with a cheque for $500 from the Apex Club to be used to purchase a fridge/ freezer for the safe storage of food while at outreaches. The President of Apex Georgia Soutar presented the cheque to Annette and Fay (Toowoomba Coordinating Team) at the Apex Changeover Ball. We sincerely thank Apex for their continued support and generous gift.

JonJon Martlew is moving on from his role as Rosies branch coordinator in Toowoomba. Jon made an enormous contribution in developing Rosies in Toowoomba. From small steps Jon has been instrumental in establishing Rosies activities and profile in his home city in the space of a few short years. His embrace of all those he engages with is legendary as is his selflessness in giving of his time and more. In that time Jon has trained a couple hundred volunteers, drawn the support of numerous individuals and organisations, and trebled the outreach activity. Rosies is a wonderful presence in the Toowoomba community for which Jon and his committee can be justifiably proud.

toowoomba carnival of flowersRosies’ Toowoomba Branch team paraded for the Carnival of Flowers in front of 30,000 plus people for the second year.

Our volunteers and Swagman, one of our regular friends on the street, were delighted to see so many smiles coming from the crowd.

‘Taking part in the event means a lot to our Rosies volunteers. It simply shows our deep connection with the community, between people giving their time or raising donations, and our many friends on the street. We are all part of the same bouquet despite our differences’, said Jon Martlew, our coordinator in Toowoomba.
